When tracking nutrition, you may have heard of the 4/4/9 rule, a common rule of thumb used to estimate the calorie content of food based on its macronutrients:
- Protein: 4 calories per gram
- Carbohydrates: 4 calories per gram
- Fat: 9 calories per gram
For example, if a food contains 20 g of protein, 30 g of carbohydrates, and 10 g of fat, you might expect it to contain:
(20 × 4) + (30 × 4) + (10 × 9) = 290 calories
However, you may notice that the calorie total shown on a nutrition label or in the Built With Science app doesn't always match this calculation exactly.
In most cases, this is completely normal and does not mean the food entry or the Built With Science app is incorrect. There are several reasons why calories and macronutrients don't always reconcile perfectly.
The 4/4/9 rule is a helpful guideline
The 4/4/9 rule is a useful way to estimate calories from macronutrients, but it isn't an exact representation of how every food behaves.
The values of 4 calories per gram of protein, 4 calories per gram of carbohydrate, and 9 calories per gram of fat are averages. In reality, the amount of usable energy your body extracts from a food depends on the specific nutrients it contains. Some carbohydrates, such as fiber, provide significantly less usable energy than sugars or starches, and different protein and fat sources can also vary slightly in the amount of energy they provide.
Because of this, it's normal for the calorie total of a food to differ slightly from what you'd calculate using the 4/4/9 rule.
Nutrition labels aren't always exact
If you're scanning a barcode or using a branded food item, the nutrition information typically comes directly from the manufacturer's nutrition label.
Depending on local food labeling regulations, manufacturers are generally required to report nutrition information within an acceptable range rather than matching the exact laboratory value for every serving. In addition, nutrition labels often round both calorie and macronutrient values independently.
As a result, the calories listed on a food label may not perfectly match the calories you'd calculate from the reported protein, carbohydrate, and fat values.
Some foods have incomplete nutrition information
Many branded foods only report the nutrients that are required on their nutrition labels.
This means a scanned food may contain complete calorie and macronutrient information while leaving out many vitamins, minerals, or other micronutrients. This is expected and reflects the information provided by the manufacturer rather than a limitation of the app.
Our food database comes from trusted third-party providers
The Built With Science app uses nutrition data from trusted third-party providers such as MyNetDiary, which contains hundreds of thousands of food items sourced from manufacturers and other verified nutrition databases.
While these databases are highly comprehensive, no food database is perfect. Occasionally, a food item may have missing or incomplete nutrition information inherited from the original source.
If you come across a food that appears clearly incomplete or incorrect, please let our support team know. We'll review the entry and work to have it corrected as quickly as possible.
What can I do if I notice an inaccuracy?
If you'd like to improve the accuracy of a food entry, there are two options:
Edit the food entry
Every food item can be edited by tapping the pencil icon in the top right corner of the food details page. If you know the complete nutrition information from the product label, you can update the macronutrients and the primary micronutrients yourself.
Use the generic food instead
If you're using a branded or barcode-scanned food and notice it's missing nutrients, try searching for the generic version instead (for example, "Generic Chicken Breast" instead of a specific brand).
Generic food entries are often more complete and typically contain a much fuller macro and micronutrient profile than manufacturer-specific entries.
